Stack Emission Testing

Background

Dedicated extract systems for example, local exhaust ventilation systems, are used specifically to remove substances from the workplace that are potentially hazardous to health. Once in the atmosphere the substances continue to be potentially hazardous and are therefore controlled. Some processes will be controlled by the integrated pollution control under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, other processes may be controlled by the Local Authority enforcing the Environmental Protection Act. Regular monitoring is required to ensure the control measures are still effective.

HBI's qualified Consultants have considerable expertise in Emission Assessment from chimneys and stacks. The consultants are active members of the Source Testing Association (STA), whose principal agenda includes raising standards of quality, training and health and safety across the industrial emissions monitoring sector. All sampling equipment and methodologies employed by HBI are approved and validated by the STA. In addition HBI are working to develop systems and methods that will satisfy the criteria of soon to be implemented CEN Standards for a wide range of emission parameters.

Validated Methods

Wherever possible, emissions monitoring is undertaken by industry-accepted methods and techniques in accordance with guidelines from bodies such as; BSI, HSE, NIOSH, US EPA etc. Sampling programmes are designed to individual client requirements and analysis being conducted at UKAMAS approved laboratories. Traditional 'wet' methods of sampling are often used in conjunction with direct read-out instrumental techniques for added flexibility.

A Consultant will normally assess relevant process conditions and analytical parameters by conducting a site visit, before preparing a detailed monitoring proposal designed to obtain sufficient data of quality to withstand regulatory scrutiny, facilitate emissions concentration modeling and the definition of engineering design/process upgrade requirements.
