Indoor Environment Key Performance Indicators

All buildings will at least have temperature set points, but how many building operators know how often and by how much conditions are outside the desired limits?  Regardless of whether a building is only heated or fully air conditioned, indoor environment KPIs can be applied.  KPIs have a number of uses including:

» setting targets on the proportion of hours deemed acceptable for conditions to be outside the recommended limits, as part of a process of continual assessment and improvement

» showing whether indoor environmental conditions are improving, deteriorating or remaining relatively constant over extended periods and changes in seasons

» dealing with workforce complaints more effectively by having evidence of exactly how well a building has performed

» identifying the most pressing environmental problems

» helping set long term requirements and budgets for replacing and upgrading HVAC equipment

» illustrating whether modifications to the HVAC system or controls produce the desired improvements in the indoor environment

» showing whether satisfactory conditions are maintained through periods of change eg office moves.

Features

The parameters measured, data analysis and reporting of the HBI Air Quality Monitoring Stations include:

» Monitoring of the key comfort parameters of temperature and relative humidity plus carbon dioxide (indicator of ventilation adequacy) and ‘total’ pollutants

» Monitoring of all parameters on a continuous basis

» Calculation of indoor environment Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that illustrate the number of hours when the building is occupied that each parameter falls outside pre-defined high and low limits. Click for more information.

» Regular reports including a table of current and historical KPIs for each month and graphical presentations of each parameter over the monitoring period.
